There was a time not so very long ago
When your love was one of the only I could count on or know
The light in your eye and the sound of your voice
Showed all the world that loving me was your choice
I have so many memories that flood into my mind
Of a man who was hard-working, gentle, and kind
Never a bad word about anyone have you spoken
Never a promise have you ever broken
Do you remember the snow mobile rides in the pasture
With the rope attached to the sled and us yelling, "faster, faster?"
I remember all the times we went out to do chores
Calling the sheep in to lock them safely behind the barn doors
I remember all the firework displays on the Fourth of July
or when we had to wait til Christmas because the pastures were too dry
And all the Christmas Eve's we have spent in your home
From the time I was tiny until now that I'm grown
Now I ask your forgiveness for placing you so high
I didn't take into account the passage of years rolling by
I never realized how precarious life can be
The last few years have been cruel and you are so different to me
If I hadn't placed you so high, your fall wouldn't have been so great
And the adjustments to you now would be easier to make
Please God help me to accept the things I can not change
Help me to stop trying to fix it and rearrange
Please help me to understand why this happens to one so dear
Help me accept his fate which now seems so clear
I must learn to love him now in a totally new way
And accept this transformation a little more day by day
I love you Grandpa for what you have given me
And I will love you more for what is yet to be

It may help you to know that my Grandfather died from Alzheimer's.
OH I LOVE IT. I loved my grandfather so much and he plays in big part in The Grass Dance. I wrote a poem for my grandpa too and will post it on my site eventually. I love the way you write.

chills and almost tears. my grandfather died from alzheimer's as well and reading your poetry said things i wanted to say but never did. my grndfather was a great man who treated my brothers and sister like we were all giant pots of gold and he was the greediest man alive. his illness and death hurt me to my core, but i've never been one to use my mouth to expres myself. it's a curse. your words are beautiful.
I do not anyone personally with Alzheimer's but from what I have learned, you captured the effect it has on those who love the people with it in your lovely poem. Very nice.
A poignant story about letting go of a narcissist in your life. Have you ever been attacked FULL force by a narcissist? It's the closest thing to being stabbed over and over in the back.
