This was my Second surgery at the age of 11. I got a physical for school with Dr. Bell. He has since retired. The Hospital I went to, was very new at that time, but has since expanded and has several location sites throughout the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex area. It is the Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. When I went there, there was only one hospital, the "Presbyterian Hospital". Times are a changing!~

I will keep my surgeon's name to initials because he is not retired. The nurse that was on my floor no longer works there anymore as of 4 years ago. I checked.

The Second Surgery I
remember quite well.
I was only 11 yrs old.
Dr. Bell found a lump
in my neck.
I had to swallow HUGE
pills and have a picture taken!

Dr. Bell & radiologist said,
"Tumor,BIG, on thyroid, needs to
come out!"
(Little did I know,Daddy had
Thyroid Cancer too!)

We go to Presbyterian Hosp.,
the first of many more visits to come.
Dr. L does my surgery.
I am totally fascinated in
the Operating Room!(OR)
It takes me a LONG time to go to
sleep!

I wake up, my throat hurts, and
am scared. I want water but cannot
have any.
Momma stays with me and gives me
ice chips and puts a cold cloth on my
forhead when I get a fever.
Thank you, Momma.

I was youngest on floor,
got balloons from everyone,
Many visitors to brighten my
Day!
After 5 days I get to go home,
and get more attention there.

They say the scar will disappear
in 10 years,-not so! It has been
23 years and I still have the scar!
I have to take thyroid pills everyday!

It is a life I would rather not have.
The attention was not worth it.

You should see the rest of my body!

Most of this was written back in May of 1988 by myself, Rebecca (Becca) Estelle Henry. I have added some things today so I am calling it to be updated as of today.

A nice reflection. I like these autobiographical writes. Perhaps you should write a book about your experiences. This shows how you don't let any challenge beat you.

This poem will most certainly strike a nerve with other children experiencing this reality. Thank you for sharing and God Bless,

Many children are traumatized by such situations, it's good you can write about it.

Sandie and others,
Please realize I am not asking for pity or sympathy. These poems I wrote were an expression of how to get feelings out of all the trauma I had endured as a child. I have several more poems together to put in, later on today. Thank you so much for your comment, Sandie!
Love ya!
