Many hours are spent discussing this metre or that style in poetry. During a discussion I (foolishly) said it was possible to write a poem in half an hour. So I was challenged with the added "In the style of Kipling"! I doubt if the second part of the challenge was achieved - but here it is! 28 minutes hence the abrupt ending!
The 1888 first Zulu uprising, led by Dinuzulu, inspired this poem.
IMPI.
Lionel J Anthony.
Afric’s dust a shimmered
An’ shone in Afric’s sun
An’ ten thousand throats arumbled
When the Impi began ‘is run.
“Stand to” the sar’nt shouted
Tommy look to yer gun.
Fifteen-hunnered scarlet coats
Faced front
When the Impi began ‘is run.
Afric’s ground a-trembled
An’ unshod feet a rumbled
Ten thousand shield to drum
An’ our ‘earts was in our throats
When the Impi began ‘s run.
Afric’s sons was coming
A-banging on their shields’
Outnumbering ten to one,
Their feathered heads a-tossin-
The Impi on ‘is run.
Afric’s war cry watered
Down yer blood and dried yer throat
“Take aim! Tighter on yer gun,
Watch yer markers, steady lads;
We’ll make the Impis run.
Afric’s bull was chargin’
An’ tossin’ ostrich feather ‘ats,
Pied in Afric’s burnin’ sun,
An’ thuddin’ feet afar off
Sounded Impi’s run.
“Front rank fire!” Sar’nt cried,
An’ unnerds of them Impis died,
“Rear rank fire, reload yer gun”.
An’ powder smoke got in yer eyes,
An’ still the Impis run.
Afric’s sun’s a cruel sun
It burns skin, dark an’ fair,
An’ on the assegai and gun
An’ ‘uman screams it glared;
When Impi ‘ad ‘is run.
All that afternoon they came,
Those warriors came an’ died
An’ scarlet coats to fall began
To gleamin’ assegai.
The Impi on ‘is run.
A distant bugle call rang out,
Afric’s bull began to turn,
The regiment ‘ad come.
With flags a-fly an’ musket roar
They ended Impi’s run
