I Guess the Road IS too Long.

I went wrong somewhere. This is not how I thought my oldest son to be. He lives 160 miles from where I do. This weekend he had to travel to Canada; had to drive within 10 miles of my house to get there and back. Not even a phone call to see if I were alive. For the life of me I don't know what's wrong and it's breaking my heart. A very painful lesson in life I received today. But for the sake of my other children, I will survive.

It was a long four years ago,
I asked if the road was too long;
For all of these years I've waited,
Not the road, thoughtfulness is not strong.

As I write this, this very minute,
He's driving by, within ten short miles;
And my Grandchildren are with him,
Lord, how I'd love to see their smiles.

So, if it's not the road that's too long,
It's what was said way back in time;
The road's not too long, it's a one way,
The message has come through just fine.

I thought my boy was just like me,
We are alike in so many ways;
But been so long since he's dropped in,
Over one thousand four hundred days.

So, some of the roads are too long,
And life is definitely too short;
When it comes down to fatherhood,
He doesn't give me a second thought.

Not a mountain is high enough,
Nor is there a river too wide;
With every chance that I get,
I'll spend it by my Grandchildren's side.

So far apart we have become,
But not by miles are we kept apart;
The chasm has become so wide,
Made wider by two broken hearts.

Not there because one has to be,
It is something one should want to do;
No, there is not a road too long,
When it comes down to my love for you.

Each day I still say a special prayer,
From deep within an aching soul;
A prayer that we could be together,
But hope is beginning to grow cold.

The road too long I guess does exist,
With family as well as with friends;
But because of love I'll still be there,
Up to the time that my trail ends.

This poem brought tears to my eyes, Paul. It is so sad when adversity seperates two people. It has happened to me, as I'm sure it has happened to others. I'm usually the forgiving one and make the first effort to mend the breach--of course that puts me in the position of always having to be the peacemaker no matter who is at fault. Life is so short. Why does it have to be this way??

My brother used to live about 3 minutes away from Mom and went by her house every day to go to work , and did not stop in. She was also hurt by this. I guess he just did not make the time or was never so thoughtful as others.

Not only is the father's heart being rent, but also the son by carrying his own burden. Somehow the wall must be breached through communication by card, letter, or phone call...and keep trying for both your sakes. A sad situation...

Paul we love our children no matter how we hurt at times maybe you should make that move and pick up the phone. It doesn't matter what happened or who is right or wrong as long as you don't let that road get any longer, life is too short. Thank you for sharing.

Newfie Hugs for both of you, Rose

King David suffered greatly for sons with love that grew cold. I pray yours never gets to that point and someday, somehow, God will bring you together. Sometimes all that is needed is one to reach out to the other and not wait any long. Deborah

Sad. Just keep the door open and maybe you will be surprised some day. Put a hand out it certainly helped me get a better relationship with my children back when it wasn't 10 miles but just one that was too long. Good luck and God bless. Liz

Such a heartbreaking write, whatever it is I hope he realizes that all can be made well again. It is the hardest thing and the most painfull when a parent feels such distance from their child. My heart goes out to you and I will keep him in my prayers...till he realizes your love closes the distance that has been created.

Hugs

I'm so sorry to read about this sad situation with your son. Don't give up hope. Many times we might think God is not answering our prayers, while He is working unseen in the life of our children. He loves them more than we do, and His Father heart must be grieving with you. Let Him comfort you, dear Paul, and keep trusting Him to lead you in this and to bring the breakthrough that you long for.

Your friend and sister,
Connie

Paul,

You have no idea how this touches my heart. Our childrengrow up and sometimes they leave us to fly solo for a while. They don't need reasons. They just do things differently and it breaks our hearts.
I do pray that he will rethink his reasons for being distant for the sake of his childre.

Love and blessings!
Susan
