Chalkboard

these were my grandmother's last words
in the hospital
unable to speak

                    CHALKBOARD

 

 Outside the island
Brimmed with life

 White caps broke
Black ocean roared

 

I love you all
Her last words
 

 Scrawled in white
On a black chalkboard 

 

I ran as fast
As I could

 Absent words to say

 Afraid to speak
Afraid to look

 Unsure of how to pray

 

Sandy path
Salty air
Flee further down that road
 


 Stumbled upon a pool of blood
It was…a gigantic toad
 


 Blindsided and flattened

 

It’s shocked expression
Embedded in the sand

 

Ironic it is
How many die

 

Not by gods will
But our own hand

 

Yarns are spun
Excuses made

 

Another glass is poured 

 

Memories fade
Lessons erased
 


 White dust on a
Black chalkboard

To capture the innocence of a child's wonder and worry and deliver it in such a simple yet eloquent story that unwinds like the surf hitting the shore is beautiful... lovely write indeed and could picture the scene fully in my mind.

Old fashioned poetry never, ever, ever, ever ceases to render it's readers speechless. Absolutely brilliant here, Deborah. I love the philosophical thought process behind this; as I could definitely see there was indeed a very strong notion that initiated these words. Needless to say, your style of penning complements the thought. Bravo! :)
