What am I doing?

Why am I here?

What possessed me to do this?

To walk this lonely beach,

Alone.

At night.

They've gone for a walk.

 Left five minutes ago,

I was told..

They couldn't have gone too far.

I must find them.

I venture into the darkness.

Alone.

I can't turn back now.

The night is as black as pitch,

The beach appears lonely,

but hearing voices ahead of me!!

Around me,

But they're not voices I know.

Not the ones I'm searching for,

The ones that left just five minutes ago.

Scared out of my wits now,

No longer walking,

A slow trot,

Head spinning.

Looking backwards,

Sideways,

Even in the murky water..

Seeing a group of five ahead..

That must be them..

A mistake!!!

Hoping...praying...

They take no notice of me...

Lucky this time..

they don't.

Running now,

My thoughts racing.

The crashing waves

break the silence of the night.

drowning out all sounds now,

Seeing a couple cuddling under a tree.

They seem harmless.

Running still.

breathless now.

Alone and afraid now,

when suddenly four guys

just ahead of me

shine their light directly at me.

I begin to pray...

"Dear Lord,

Please let them see your presence

around me!"

"Lord, take this walk with me!"

I acknowledge their presence,

but quickly turn around and start walking

as fast as I could.

Listening closely,

They're not following.

Phew!!!  Relief!!!

Thank God.

The return walk was not as bad.

I felt a calmness take over my body.

It didn't even seem as long.

Entering the gate to the guest house,

I'm exhausted now.

Seated on a balcony chair,

having a much-needed drink,

I see my party of five,

approaching from

the opposite direction!!!

Yikes, Jenni, I was fleeing with you! Strange, isn't it, how simple situations can propel us into irrational, or not, panic? When I was in Wisconsin this summer, everyone had left my husband's parents house except me. I went outside to sit and enjoy the WI night, reveling in the quiet, but it was quite dark with no moon, they had told us they had seen a bear earlier in the year, I thought I saw the shadows near the garden move, towards me or away, I didn't wait to find out! I ran like a bat out of hell to get into the safety of the house, slamming and locking the door! I felt relieved and a bit ridiculous. But I wasn't stepping foot out into the rural darkness of the shadowed night for love or money! :) It made a great story the next day, everyone who came to visit had to be told, by me, with all the embellishments the safety of the light of day supplied, and of course I was teased and laughed at!! I really can relate to your story, bears, people, shadows; anything could be out there...

jenni,
you have caught the essence of how
real, or imagined dangers are magnified
by our irrational fear.
