The Drug Was My Master

A fictional account of the affects of drugs.

My friends smiled at me and told me it was cool
To smoke a drug that destroyed my body and made me look like a fool

I thought I was somebody, I thought i was unstoppable
but sniffing cocaine and shooting heroine made being high unbearable

I got addicted and needed the drug for breakfast lunch and dinner
I didn't care that my insides burned or that I was getting thinner

One day I took too much and fell to the floor
All I could see through my bloodshot eyes was an ambulance at the door

I was rushed to the hospital
The lights were blinding my eyes
My insides were aching my brain all screwed
They hooked me to a machine that fed me liquid food

My life is ruined now those friends have all been busted
I feel hurt by all those lying friends who I trusted

I was wrong to trust them
No smiling faces no more I'll help you get high
No more friends forever their promises were all lies
I have no one only myself and my mind because as I lie in my grave
I know that the drug was my master and
I was its slave

How true-reminds me alot of my favorite song by country artist Jamey Johnson called "The High Cost of Living." I read it at my brother's wake, as he was a recovering addict and I wanted to continue to spread the same message you showed here for his memory. Great poem.

Nice work on this poem...the disastrous nature of drugs is a reality of many who are led astray by the so called friendship of another
