The Life of a Poet

(The freedom we have has sometimes disrupted the confines of a great relationship...yet we have to be true to ourselves, to our feelings. we are constantly shifting consciousness to evoke the magnificient works that have brought down kingdoms and raised a beggar to the heights of unimaginable glory. But sometimes it plays a bad tune to those who've no idea of what it is, what it means to be a true poet in every sense of the word...)I've recently revised this piece, thanks to my friend, Andre Bendavi ben-YEHU.

A poet lives a solitary life
like a grain of sand on a sandy beach
yet apart
alone
lonely
forgotten star
in the never ending milky way

We are like seasons
ever changing, ever thesame

like ripples in a pond
waves of the sea's water
ever moving forward  to re-set
like the sun
master of hide and seek
at eventide it must hide
for fear of giving it all away--yet we still do

We are the sound of a fallen pin
in the pressence of an angry mob
our silence can be heard only
by those with third ears

"I am surrounded by people
yet I stand alone
Often times I've wondered
would life be different
were not my every breath made of words?
Would I be like everyone else--
more tolerated, better understood?

but how do you explain
one who's inclined by the grace of sanity
to use ones own blood
if all the ink wells of the universe ran dry?"

A poet does not write because he has to
or wants to
his very existence depends on that moment
when ink and paper dance.

"I am a poet, I must be, lest I perish..."

I love the ending of this poem... or life creed, rather.

I didn't discover poetry until just a few months ago, but rather left that venue for my talented poet sister, Charlie. :~) But then... something happened and words just began to spill out with a need for being written in a form other than prose.

Well done!

This is such sweet music to my years...such a stunning offering of what it is to be a poet.
"I am a poet, I must be, lest I perish..."
This was simply wonderful. Love, Diana.

Woman, that sure is beautiful too, not only what you say but how you begin saying it. It sort of starts out with the rhythm of a pebble cast into a mirror lake and then moves out like those ripples in a satifying undulation. I think this is the best so far I've read of you. More like this and I will HAVE to keep your poems closer.

PS: I have recently come to appreciate and know Andre who is a poet of a higher order for sure and one fine fellow human! I was slack (as usual) in getting to know him!

This is so, so true. I almost suffocated myself when I deprived my muse of that dance floor.
Writing again after 12 years has been like learning to drink clear water after straining stale mud through my teeth for years.

And lucky we are too, aren't we. And English-speakers to boot. Ours is a vocabulary larger than all the rest by far. Lucky, lucky, lucky... Dance on... --Charlie

Oh my, how you have encapsulated my life, as a teacher saw a long time back... it is lonely, as others rarely seem to understand what you're thinking or perceiving, but on that rare occasion you meet a like minded person who sees life, and is awake it is a rare but wonderful time.. as so many are asleep in the hum drum world of gotta get, gotta get, gotta have, gotta work more hours to get the money to be forever happy with the latest this, that, one car, two cars three cars, faster faster more more........dead... and lived sleeping...
When in countries that people are happy, most don't have a tv, car, etc.... I gave up my car for a push bike, and blimey, how much more does one notice life... but never without my note pad....
The world owes it's sanity to artists...

You are right Marcia, we do write because we have to and that's what I mean when I say "I am a poet, I must be, lest I perish..." and our existence depends on writing poetry because we were created to be poets...

Great poem Bernice. I especially like the way you ended it even though I'm one of those who write because I have to.
