(Like so many, I am constantly being asked what I am...Now I look at my daughter and wonder what box to check off in forms, she already asks me what she is--black or white, and I look into her eyes and tell her "My darling, you are a child of the universe" We live in societies that teach us to look for differences so much so that we often forget our similarities)

I am a child of the universe my mother, the earth my father, the sun I have no race
no color no hue
I exist as one
with myself
I have no face
no name
no hate
so,
should you ever wonder
who
where
or what I am
remember--this simple truth
I am a child
a child of the universe
Oh Man! This Is Brilliant Write!
I Love It!!
You Are A Beautiful Poetess In Our Universe!
I seen a lady on Oprah back in 1992, and she asked the audiance about salad. Lettuce, Tomatoes, Onions, Radishes, Green Bell Pepper...and so on...salad dressing, oil...she explained how boring life would be withou variety & all races are important to the salad of life
(Of Course She Said It Much Better Than I Did)
I love your use of colors to enhance the meaning of the poem. Your little one is fortunate to have your teaching of such an important lesson. I especially like "no hate." What a great beginning!
Oh! I LOVE this Bernice!! I have the same problem with my children... They are not African American, but Haitian, and they hate being called black for they know their colors and know that they are brown. :~) I have a daughter who is Muhlatto as well... I just hate the forms! What do you mark when they ask about your family and you are supposed to categorize everyone in it?? I still haven't figured that one out...
Anyway, this poem is perfect in its simplicity of answer and I love the use of color in it as well!!
Fabulous... Thank you.
Cryssa :~)
and you got the TRUTH and the perfect Title! and i love the touches of childlike color. You teach your children well, if only all would...
best, michael guy
Great! This is a statement for each of us... for we are nothing more, and absolutely, children of the universe, the earth, our environment, home. Thank you for this one.

Very beautiful writing sweet lady, stay safe and well...Hugs
Absolutely beautiful and SO TRUE. When I lived in Ireland people kept asking me if I was Irish. I said I am a Heinz 57 Variety American. I like your description much better. We should all say that we are "a child of the universe", OR, I am God's child :-)
I have this same problem with my niece... I am glad you wrote this poem, it gives me a new perspective. Very beautiful poem...wouldn't that be glorious if we all thought like that.
Fantastic write! Our worldly governments have the mass populations broken down into so many "Stupid" categories that I can no longer keep up with the nonsense. When will they learn we are all human beings, the world would be a much better place then....
...with the esscence of truth...you have penned beautifully all the colors of crayon...within a special box...the universe...not to melt...perhaps to meld.
You gave your daughter an excellent response. I remember very well the last form I filled out. It was an optional response but I checked other and wrote in : A Child of God. Peace and Blessings Always, Paul.

Oh my, you sound just like a letter I've sent my MP. About Britishness day. I am not English just because I was born on a piece of land we call England. I am a man who was born on a piece of a planet that man has labeled England. Rather like my muslim friends finally understood. They are not muslims, as that is a label, but they are in the brotherhood of man, but they follow the teachings of love as taught by Mohammed. Once all labels are dropped it is amazing how people see life through a different paradigm. Labels, bloody labels cause wars. Mid east, they are on the same piece of land but the labels cause strife. Get rid of all labels, and you are bright enough to know my next sentence pretty babe...
