Desert tortoises are natural enemies, and would just assume kill each other. But when I saw my Sam and Fred eating and walking together after constant fighting, it was an inspiration.

Grazing through the verdant grass

Tortoises roam, though not very fast.

They march like soldiers looking to eat,

Ah, honeysuckle, a perfect treat.

They see each other and war begins.  For each

Thinks this territory is their own. Their weapons

Are hardened shells, each tortoise wanting to

Save his happy home.  Violently, they butt heads, give up and leave each other alone.

They stop and realize what a stupid game this is.

Walking side by side, they travel the grass

Together, knowing fighting solves nothing

And is no way for anyone to live.

We can always learn so much from our pets and animal friends. We think we're so superior, yet a pet gives one thing we can't....unconditional love. Great write!

I believe we don't need to fight to solve anything in this world. There are better and more caring ways to go out about our business.

Really good descriptive analogy of the way of the desert tortoise.

Interesting. I didn't know that they fight each other. I do know they can be vicious. When I was a little girl one bit me in my stomach (don't know what kind it was,) but it held on and the only way daddy could get it loose from my flesh was by cutting its head off with an axe.

Mary - I think I know that you don't mean there never is reason for fighting for what you believe in -- fighting to protect our freedom, etc. In a perfect world, reasons would not exist. But person to person, we should look for our similarities and rejoice in that rather than look for our differences. Sharing is better than fighting to the death. Your poem makes us think about that. Thanks. Susan

Oh, I don't know. Fighting saved the word in World War II. I doubt if you would even be able to write this poem and publish it online if the other side had won. Course, I agree, when it comes to Tortoises maybe fighting is a waste of time and energy.
