He was cross-eyed, had a tail too long,
And for his age much too small. The
others looked at him and thought him rather
odd. But there was one cat that saw him
and thought she was his Mom.
She took him in her arms and he knew he found a home.
She played with him and bathed him,
and though this was not her kitten,
treated
him as her own.
The little kitten loved this cat, laid next to her
and purred. She protected him while he put a
gleam in her eye. She would growl and hiss at the others
if they ever made him cry.
Scamper could never have kittens, so she took Socks to be her own.
They needed each other; he needed someone to love him,
while she needed a child to love.
Though there is no blood between them,
Scamper and Socks are Mother and Son. For a true family,
the only ingredient ever needed is a pure unconditional love.

How so very true, indeed, especially for animals; they teach me something, every day. I'm lucky enough to have both dogs and cats who always very willingly play mother, father, sister, or brother to the latest street orphan who arrives at our door.
