walking at her side along a busy tree lined street
a visual happiness obvious to all those we'd meet
my arm draped proudly over her slender shoulder
my love for her growing with every day I got older
my room filled with her lingering feminine scent
where we showed each other what love really meant
that we had an animal passion was certainly true
but my love went so much deeper, that much I knew
one of so many memories from that room I'll keep
is the hours I spent watching her in peaceful sleep
content to give her soft skin the gentlest touch
childishly delighted to elicit the slightest flush
for her though my tender heart failed to be enough
one night she uttered some words, just off the cuff
'I don't love you now, in fact I don't think I ever did'
it was just a sentiment that she felt better off hid
my body sagged as my whole world stopped just there
plunging me into long years of hopelessness and despair
near a decade later I laughingly thought I'd survived
and even my broken mind and heart had finally revived
an inner beauty way beyond what I thought could exist
reached me, my inadequate barriers unable to resist
feelings for too long penned in simply flooded out
I was where I promised never to return I had no doubt
her words of love I really believed were sincere
and losing a woman like that became my ultimate fear
I gave her love, devotion, everything I possibly could
had she asked, she could've had my last drop of blood
but once more my love chose to head out the front door
leaving me in dreading what I knew was now in store
so if you enquire as to why I prefer a life of solitude
you'll see I prefer that to having my heart chewed
