Pain - The physical side

Trying to use the physical to forget the emotional

Lungs, too long neglected, feel the strain
Redden face assaulted by freezing rain
Icy cold wind penetrates my entire core
Cheap boots sodden, chilled feet raw

Another shiver from Mother Nature’s kiss
Too many years past, to be doing all this
Legs can hardly walk let alone run
Just the latest stupid thing I’ve done

First step on the long path I so dread
Thoughts of you fill my aching head
Though pain ahead, must make a start
Close the abyss left in my heart

Remembered from a youth so long past
Dim recollections, of when I ran so fast
Supple body young, and oh so fine
Running hard, all cleared from mind

Longed for emptiness, oh please, a repeat
Forget heartache, prefer simple aching feet
Body no longer fit, gone the one in dreams
Pain everywhere, falling apart at seams

Strength disappeared, can take no more
Jellied legs collapse to waterery floor
Laboured breaths, attached to each a knife
Body bent double. Is this really life?

Prolonged agony endures, yet worst of all
Your picture still remains, proud and tall
The torture my body has just been through
Has done nothing to diminish my love for you
