When the one you love is feeling pain And you’re too far away to hear her complain But you know from whispering birds And can see it written in her words How do you tell her you feel it too That knowing her hurt agonises you Though we were together so short a time And I knew she was never truly mine That she left behind a broken heart When from my life she chose to depart To another she went, to try over again And from me she promised to refrain If that return turns out too cold Remember the love for her I hold And I’ll gladly hold out my soft hand With a promise to try and understand The urge to see her goes so deep Held only by a promise to keep But anything I will try to do or say To keep my love’s pain at bay
