My feelings long after my marriage ended

Reason for living blown away
She no longer needs me to stay
Thought we were as hand and glove
No! It seemed that only I loved

Fearful thoughts wander rife
Welcome the man with the scythe
Death beckons with Piper’s flute
Such an easy choice that route

Fate decrees I’m to stay alive
To watch those around me thrive
My eyes locked in vacant stare
No one left with whom to share

Time’s the healer or so it’s said
But can’t believe all I’ve read
Long years now have drifted past
Only the agony seems to last

From most eyes its well hidden
Yet it oft appears unbidden
To dampen any momentary joy
Further sign of Fate’s dark ploy

To most I’m that normal bloke
Always there with wit or joke
Even my kids don’t really know
The despair that bubbles below
