The Price For Love

Moments of silence appear
then vanish to oblivion
leaving behind today's portion of pain
gleaned from yesterdays
harvest of love

Within my heart a fairytale awakens
believing in yesterday
longing for the path of passionate love
but not willing to go astray
love is lost for another day

My words surrender nothing
they speak of hallowed ground
they sing of love’s lost lessons
where the dearest and forsaken drown
where love’s sweet silence can be found

Exhausted from brutal lessons
drained from future prey
the hunt for love continues
but it won’t proceed today
the price for love is too dear to pay

I think "confessional" poetry, when well written, can be very inspirational, poignant, sad and confronting all rolled into one That's why I like much of the work of the late Sylvia Plath.
It is, however, very difficult to write and (from my experience) quite embarrassing to read. This is because, in many cases, it exudes too much self-pity despite being honest and well-intentioned.
I've read your poem over and over and given its theme and articulation of that theme a fair degree of reflection. I have always concluded that it is a very well written and revelatory poem and completely devoid of triteness and self-pity.
Your use of imagery and evocative language is appropriate and relevant and brings in the reader in ways that a good poem should.
Thanks for posting it.

To the wings that have been brocken and to a heart that has been shatterd, some of us gather feathers to hold until the day comes...with whisperd tears of love mends a brocken heart to fly once again with open wings...
Thanks for reading mine, I realy like your work also...

I would not trade my experiences of lost love and heartache for anything...they are what taught me life's valuable lessons. Finding the truth much later made me realize that I must give more easily than ever before...not less.

I agree with Mas, I don't have the courage to love anyone just now. I find it's easier than being hurt.

A wonderful write...
I feel the same myself - i think twice abt loving coz i just don't have the courage to bear the hurt. Hang in there hun...there's gotta be someone who'll rid us of our fear and fly us to the place we're longing for.

You must have been hurt real deep, but I am sure you will find the happiness that now seems so elusive. Love and prayers. Victor

Another brilliant piece...you write so beautifully...I just hope you don't close yourself off from the possibility of the real thing coming your way, because you have so much to offer. at least keep the door open a crack...;-) Everything hurts in this world.

Another beautiful poem, Lori. It brings back many memories. I wrote this on February 12, 1990:

A Dreamer’s Poem

Because in knowing how to break the silence
I do not give up any part of myself,
Because in knowing loneliness and tears
I do not yield to the vacuum of each day,
Because my heart races past the smiles
that bandage the pain of living,
Because my head throbs with millions of
colliding thoughts, love buried in hate,
truth buried in lies, education buried
in ignorance...
I dream, I envision, I picture,
I picture my love as a lonely bird
perched on a crystal branch
of imagination.

Lori I can understnd your hurt and your pain in this poem. And your commnent on "My Make Believe World" hit the nail on the head. Love can be great, but it ends up like this poem did. Time after time we go through this but never learn. But we feel and love and we all have to plunge in and get wet, if we are to find happiness. An excellent poem. And thank you again for you comment on mine. Bill Hugs

Another beautiful poem hun, spoken from the heart and from your experience. But you know, the price of not loving is even a higher price to pay.. <smile> Something it took this old woman a long time to find out. Of all the heartbreak from loving, in looking back now I don't think I would change a thing.. as with each hearbreak was another lesson learned.

You have a beautiful heart hun... Don't keep it locked up too long. For I have a feeling Mr. Right is looking for you. Your prince will come... I just know it.

Love and Light
