You once had a lover
or was He a friend
He once made a promise
said His love would not end
then He set You aside
one emotion filled day
put His love in his pocket
and sent You away
Your wrists bare the marks
of that emotion filled time
when blood fell like crimson
a fine hearty red wine
a California Merlot
an escape from time
self destruction's bitter weakness
depression's sweet crime.
They found You in a pool
of rose colored blood
warm water still dripping
in that stationary tub
a look of peace upon Your face
depression had won
it's rose colored race.
Now as We view
and pay our respects
We remember the times
when you warned Us of this
but We were too busy
to hear of such things
We left you alone
in depression’s sweet pain.
Now You are gone
are You all alone...
or are You at peace
in some celestial home...
Now We all bear the marks
of that emotion filled time
when blood fell like crimson
a fine hearty red wine.
Depression is a silent killer... unless we listen closely.

I just ran across this. Very sad and powerful. I know a girl whose sister just killed herself a few months back. She tried many times to "get well" before finally making the ultimate surrender. For some, perhaps, the only way to find real and lasting peace in a life with so many jagged edges. Great writing Lori, even if it goes a few years back.

Great works ! Depression can sneak up on the strongest of people
Lori, your words brought back memories of a time when I stood and said good-bye to a friend whose short tragic life was filled with a darkness none of us could bring light into. You are a much needed voice for those who can no longer speak for themselves because the pain became too great to bear.
I know depression well and bear its marks. What matters is that people like you and I survived it. We chose life. And for me, poetry is the best therapy of all. I really felt this poem.
What an emotional poem for me to read. I can't agree with you more - we really need to watch for the signs of depressin in our friends
and family members. It kills so many of us. You're a fantastic writer! And oh, by the way, thanks so much for the comments on my poetry. I'm

This one is strong -- thank you for the comment on the new one. I was writing that one for the past two days. If you like that one, you'll like some of the short stories. Very ominious and dark -- this one is also quite ominious as well.

Depression can have a vice-like grip, and yet sometimes it just fades away suddenly. You described the agony of depression very well, great writing.

The pain can go that deep and seems to get deeper and grow larger with time. Until unable to bear it you must react to the pressure that builds within you. Were you there? Must be so? I was in this state of mind many times in the recent past. I understand these words you have written. Funny though how some people do not listen to those who cry out. I have a few of these people in my life. Thank you for sharing this silent killer.

Great write Lori. Depression is an illness many are ashamed to talk about or mention, but help is there. I can't listen when they don't want me to hear, because I love some of them I bring it up anyway. I've known depression myself, and we know it's not fun.
You are soooo right Lori...it is imperative that we pay a little more attention to each other for it could be any one of us and that would tear us apart. So many times we take others for granted while we are preoccupied with daily life and our little chores. And it is easier to skim the surface of their lives and not hear the warning cries. You have put this so well in words and I, for one, thank you for reminding me.
