A return journey.

Poem Artwork

Grandmother’s rickety house leans so, it seems in danger

From high winds. The For Sale sign rattles on its chains.

New construction and McMansions stare blankly, soulless.

At least the jacarandas remain as silent witnesses, strewing

Joyous lavender in equal sprays across gray curbs and shiny luxury cars.

The neighbor hobbles to his mail box, Don Quixote on a quest.

Age has twisted his body into a telltale question mark.

“Do you still speak only Spanish?” I blurt

Like the laughing girl he taught to eat persimmons.

He lifts his head a notch to catch a glimpse of grown-up me.

”"El tiempo gana en todos los idiomas, mi amiga.”*

He chortles into his chest. “¡Que te vaya bien, Dulcinea!”

*Time wins in all languages, my friend.

Have a good day, Dulcinea.

The gentrification of the neighborhood. Old ushers out and new ushers in. Glad you were at the nexus of both to observe it.

River of Memories: An Appalachian Boyhood by David Thompson

For a time, I perched myself on a flat rock, comparing my life with the Guyandotte River. Just as its tributaries replenish it daily, changing it in some small—sometimes great—degree, so have the day-to-day occurrences of life changed me. Like the ri

Black Ash & Green (Sessions with my Therapist) by Pearl Barley C M Donaldson

She never felt safe at home as a young girl, and didn't understand why when she finally escaped she wasn't safe in the big wide world either ...effectively jumping out of the frying pan into the fire!
