For Cheryl...

What Happened to Elizabeth?

Long ago we used to dream
about our children’s names
when we grew up and married
and started having kids.

I was going to name my daughter
“Laska”, remember that?
And you were going to have
one too, and name her Elizabeth.

What happened to these children--
the ones we dreamed about?
Are they living now in others’ arms
or are they shattered dreams?

The pieces of the puzzle fade
in the haze of each new day,
and I forget about the dreams
I had when I was younger…

But every now and then I hear
the names that still remind me--
of the ones that might have been,
when I was eight or ten…

While I hope that my dream children
are happy where they’re at,
in whispered memories of the past
my heart still aches for them...

What a hauntingly sweet story. Made me think of people I once knew but had forgotten. Also about what had become of them and did they now have families. Your style is so tangible and moving. Liked the way you included personal details and even named them "dream children"
Keep writing Cryssa. : )

This one breathes deeply into my dream lungs, resussitating something almost forgotten. Elizabeth... laminated at the brink of time-- a bookmark now in my favorite chapter of that book--you know the one--it's dog-eared pages and fading print from visited and revisited wee-houred perusals...

Dear Cryssa, What a wonderful poem you made out of your own dream. I believe that at that age every girl dreams almost the same dream and gives names to every child in her vision. But dreams are also reality and never die, maybe they fade away till another time. Great. You are very honest with yourself and honesty will reward itself. emile

Cryssa,

You opened your soul, and reached into our own unrealized dreams with powerfully emotive words - well penned.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

River of Memories: An Appalachian Boyhood by David Thompson

For a time, I perched myself on a flat rock, comparing my life with the Guyandotte River. Just as its tributaries replenish it daily, changing it in some small—sometimes great—degree, so have the day-to-day occurrences of life changed me. Like the ri
