             Paper Dolls

Within the foyer of my home

  I played with you,

    my paper dolls…

…we were the best of friends…

When I was young and immature
I had the best of friends.
They were full of glitz and glamour
   and were my sole dimension!

I loved them with my whole heart
   -gave them everything I had.
They profusely thanked me,
-called me their queen and more…

I reveled in their teeming praise
and carried a smile in my heart--
Knowing that they loved me
-well, it was the greatest gift of all!

They lived on every word I spoke
   -I led them fearlessly.
They made my heart courageous
-I wore their flattery as my crown.

From them, I had no reason
   to guard my tender soul
and candidly I shared with them
   my biggest thoughts and fears.

Then one day they realized
   they wanted to be real
and thought that my protection
   was keeping them from freedom.

I had left my heart defenseless-
but then, watched blood drip to the floor.
The paper cut their words gave
   stung me to the core.

Too late, I had discovered
their superficial kindness disguised a thin veneer--
worn only to conceal the truth
   of their one-dimensional realm…

I used to have the best of friends.
I loved them, oh, so much…
but I didn’t know the damage
   a paper doll could do!

Within the foyer of my home

   I played with you,

     my paper dolls…

                     …but now, I know you were imaginary…

The meaning of this one escapes me..perhaps the loss of childhood?..but my poor understanding dulls it not..you have a lovley 'play with words'..I also wanted to say (but I somehow messed up) about your 'painters and framers' how much I liked it and esp. the last line and that You are a painter of words a colourful (with a U) poet..Thanks Mike

Thanks for the memories. I, too, loved my paper dolls and hated when my younger sisters would 'color' them with their crayolas. Yep, they were the best of friends.

God bless you. Kathy

This poem reminds me of a few "friends" that...took advantage of my friendship. An amazing, powerful, creative write.

What a brilliant construct, Cryssa! This is very well-crafted and conceived and the imagery is all so dove-tailed. Some wonderful lines: I especially like: "I wore their flattery as my crown" and "The paper cut their words gave stung me to the core". A fascinating write which I thoroughly enjoyed. Will stay in my mind! TY Kate xx

How delicately you combine the two realms of reality and non reality, though I must say I had hours of fun playing with mine and trying to figure out which one I would turn out to be....

Be always safe,

I remember the world of paper dolls well, and spent many afternoons in that world...it seems so tough when you have to learn the lessons

Though it is all part of the lessons we all must learn in life,it doesn't make it any easier when we go through it. Excellent poem on all levels!

This poem made me smile and made me a little sad, too, Cryssa. Where did those simpler days of playing with paper dolls go? Now, as adults, the pain that came as the result of our paper dolls' "false promises" seems so petty and miniscule when compared to the real pain inflicted upon us by false human friends.

My Dad always used to tell me not to put friends upon pedestals because they'd be sure to knock themselves off. Every time I did, they did. I know it happens to us all, at one point or another.

Excellent writing,

Jill

"Paper Dolls" is a good, kathartic write. I'm glad you're too big to play with them now. (Unless it's the real ones) I want Goldilocks. Are you done playing with her yet? --Charlie

Do I remember them? of course I do!!! a long strip of paper, folded many times and then scissors would their magic and when the paper strip got unfolded there came a paper-doll's chain!!!!!
Although, that scissors were meaner than the paper cuts, outch!!!
