Haiti Through Her Window Panes

Late September
-working in Haiti-
Talking of how, some day,
maybe our moms would come
and experience Haiti with us.

I returned
the fifth of October,
early in the morning…
Never suspecting that one day later
I would be in mourning.

I cried…
for lost opportunities,
lost experiences
and… for a silly thing really…
Letting go of her seeing Haiti.

Mid January
-a trip to Haiti-
Warm, humid air enfolds me- -
moist with memories of my mom
and how she, too, loved Haiti.

And yet,
she’d never been there- -
before…
but,
her presence was undeniable...

Through watery window panes
I saw the sights
and fell in love anew--
as I experienced Haiti
through  Mom’s eyes…

and felt her love for us too.

This is a feeling that I can easily understand: a feeling of continuity and memory kept alive, like a presence.

love the duallism here, Cryssa, and you detail with stunning accuracy that uncanny feeling that others who you know have not shared in the experience are enjoying the place with you. Shows a deep bond of both person and place. Your writes make us long to be there with you. TY Kate xx

This truly is a beautiful remembrance of Grandma. Her love for Haiti showed in her eyes. I'm certain she was with you everywhere you went, wanting to make up for that lost experience of visiting before she left.I'm sure she visits Haiti often, comforting children, and doing everything she can to help them get safely home to their families.
Luv,
Ahna

Very intriguing, heartfelt poem throughout, Cryssa, beginning with the title to seeing Haiti with the visionary eyes of your mother. Sometimes I share one with one of my parents or grandparent seeing through my eyes something I know would have had special meaning for them, especially my father right now since he is the most recently deceased...Jerry

A beautiful moment captured forever in this poem filled with grace. It is amazing when maturity hits and the child learns to see the world through a parent's eyes.

Cryssa,

A lump in my throat - as you experience Haiti, with new eyes. Powerfully penned - made all the more meaningful, as today - May 5 - was my Mom's birthday. She's been gone 18 years - I miss her, still -

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
