Masked Heart

She saw what others did…

When wishes like hers

were made known—

the scoffing,

the laughing,

the rolling eyes…

and always the shaking head

So she masked

her desire with ambivalence

and hid it within her heart

But nonetheless…

That wish, that desire…

embedded deep-

filled her heart

with yearning hope

Only fruition

would cure the ache

and heal her hurting heart;

but the cost…

too heavy,

too supreme--

the price that shatters dreams

which leaves her aching

for what she can’t have

and with only a lonely heart

a heart that can’t share

of its pain

because it never had a right

(at least according to others)

and thus she hides her pain…

sealed deep within her heart—

wounded by masked desires

A wonderful and touching story this poem tells.

There are so many masked desires around us and the day we decide to see them, to read between the lines, we become aware of them. And we become aware of our own too. It's all about having "a right" isn't it? The right that we were denied and that later we denied ourselves.

So sad. Having lived this way for awhile I related to your words. I'm out and do't look back but so many live this way Excellent Liz

(at least according to others)... Damned to those others, they who judge are jealous. Do the right thing for you. The cost is never too high for curing an aching heart, dreams are priceless. Pain only festers when sealed in your heart. Love is really all that there IS...... unmask your desires to the one for whom you ache. (I know a lot of catch phrases here, but those who judge have always ruffled my feathers) Warmth and Love to you, Carin' Spirit

So very sad to have to hide within ones self. Too cruel are the surroundings, if we should otherwise reveal our true hearts. A poignant write. Well done. Best, Elizabeth

Oh my gawd, what a horrible existence. That kind of stress can shorten one's life. I know, I lived this way my entire life. I hope she can unmask her heart one day and live! ~ Sara

It is a very lonely place to be a heart denied its right to be nurtured and treasured. Thank you for this poem.

A most revealing poem of how we all at times wear these masks of hurt that burn inside our hearts for hurts done by lying tongues.

I so hope this has nothing to do with AM. ((Auntie hugs)) Straight-forward love for me!-- no strings attached-- just the kind of seal that binds the fruit securely, and makes it last forever. :0) Love you all so much. --Charlie

Cryssa,

I've felt the pain you so aptly pen here: keeping it hidden, showing a mask of happiness to the world, when we're broken, inside: well done. Powerfully penned excellence, I pray this isn't you.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Cryssa, altho this is a very sad writing, it is so indicative of many of us who hide behind a mask for the world to see...when no one really knows the beautiful part of us that lies within... This was very lovely, and it can't be about you because you are beautiful inside and out...I saw your photo, and I see your heart every time you write... that speaks volumes... really nice. lindalaw

Never stop dreaming and wishing and hoping my beautiful friend. You have so much inside bursting to come forth...let it out, no laughing, scoffing, rolling of eyes here. Just encouragement to soar. Lovely, touching write Cryssa. Love, Bonnie
