Maybe it was not funny for him. I think you said it honestly here how that silence affected the mood, some men do not like "falsehood" even when it is supposedly "funny".

Sometimes - no words hurt the hardest
Only the listener knows
Then sometimes the hardest words hurt the worse
Only the speaker knows.
I guess it all depends on the situation
And what reaction you're looking for or you make.
Life's give & take.
