Ghosts of Highway 55

Inspired by my time spent in northwestern Indiana.

I just passed a speed limit sign.
It’s whispering my location...
At least it is this time...
I’ve got the pedal down to prove I’m alive.
I’m chasing ghosts on highway 55.

A darkened highway with many curves
stretches the imagination
that never seems to learn.
Many have died here speeding through time
and becoming a cross along highway 55.

Through Shelby, a town that’s but a ghost
wrapped around the empty shell
of a vacant factory - no more jobs to post.
And through Lowell following the northern line
There are too many ghosts along highway 55.

I remember staying there when I was young
Driving and swerving through life
dodging after whatever would come.
This is where I wrote some inspiring rhymes...
Inspired by the ghosts of highway 55.

My boyfriend’s parents lived on its shoulder
two lifetimes spent along the Kankakee.
Highways crack and lives only get older
before the light within no longer shines
and come the ghosts of highway 55.

With the carnival, we set up once in Thayre,
my first time away from home
spent in the shade of metallic beings there
It was once again Lincoln Daze festival time
as our music lulled the ghosts of highway 55.

This sounds like the road through Ut i-15 that once was all the neat little towns that now are bypassed and all those good juicy hamburgers in Nephi and fresh fruit stands in Santa Clara cute little ol towns Meadow for one and the juke boxes on the tables and the sweet lil ol waitress in Beaver, now not even seen . This is a neat write here about the "progress?" we're making. Thanks

I think that we all know highways like this. We have several in our state that has plenty of ghosts to tell tales.

I just drove down US 1 in Indiana today...and felt much as you did about the memories shared in this piece...lots of ghosts...old homes and barns that just cried out to be saved, rusting cars, abandoned brick schoolhouses from the early 1900's that had caved in from neglect. This is a great piece Lori.

thank you for memories from the midwest--grew up in ohio, have been through indiana, and yes, i remember highway 55. :) the worst wreck i ever had was 20 miles from indianapolis, a week after the indy 500 LOL girlfriend was driving, i was snoozing in the passenger side...dreaming i was on a rollercoaster...i woke up and HEY, we're flipping down the highway!!!!!! cruise control went out at the same time a tire blew...not pretty. thank God we all had seatbelts on and no one was seriously injured or killed...cop told us we were a week late for the indy 500 LOL

thanks for the memory--vivid imagery makes this a keeper--

Epiphany by Gary Stephens

“We’re going to use nine megaton warheads in space and we’re not sure they’re large enough to be effective. Why would you even consider using kiloton-range surface-to-air warheads as back-up?” The answer was succinct. “Because they’re all we have.”
