Leave the Anger

They tell me I have to let go of the anger
But I know the anger is all that I have left
They took everything else when I was too young
To say yes or no, too young to even guess
What ultimate cost this victim would bear
When I still believed the world was good
And the people in it trustworthy
When I thought older meant wiser
And a wise man would never hurt me
Leave me my anger, burning hot inside me
There are times when it's heat is the only warmth
I know and times when that emotion, anger,
Is all that reminds me I’m still alive
I appreciate the concern but it comes too late
Where were your hands to stop the pain
When I was too young to sustain it
Where were your words to help me then
When I was too young to understand it
There was no one then to offer me protection
So spare me now the belated platitudes
And leave me to my anger....
It’s been my companion for many years
And I would be empty and lost without it

This is not autobiographical but addresses a subject we all need be concerned with...abuse of children. If you suspect a child is being abused, do something! Contact Family Services, the local YWCA, a Child Abuse Hotline...but please do something.

great write! For not being autobiographical you've hit an important issue on the head.

Sometimes Sue, child abuse and sexual abuse are kept hidden from the world for a long time. Sometimes poeple see tell tale signs and turn their backs on it and close their minds, but sometiems it goes on for years and never gets found out. Many children are to ashamed or too afraid to say anything. Some of the abuse is so sever on a child that at times I feel like killing the abuser, but I guess that is not the answer. It would only make me feel like an abuser also. It is so good that you have the 800 hot line amd are doing what you can to help. More of us, like myself, should also try to get involved in this noble cause. God bless you in your efforts. Bill Murray

What a tear jerker, Sue. Child abuse is horrid and it's wonderful to know some people get over it (not talking of you). You wrote with such knowledge, I really appreciated this piece.

Happy New Year!!

Good write, but I must say the first two lines are far superior than the rest.

Amen Sue. I have written many
poems on child and spouse abuse.
It leaves lifetime scars and
hearts that sometimes never
heal.
