This poem is dedicated to Steph. It should not be taken as man-bashing. It is basher-bashing! Whether the bashing is literal or figurative. Doubt I need to point out that men are maltreated by spouses and other 'significant others.' Naturally, many are reluctant to talk about it. {Happy to report that this poem has been accepted by Angels That Care. Link's now posted -- thanks to Marcia and other Angels.}

The One Time he's Right, he's Right
Won't happen again, he said and said and said. Cleaned up my act, he stressed, stressed, stressed. You can count on me, he said. Said, said, yes, yes, and said. I am going to be good. I am going to treat you right. I am determined, you will see. . .see?
Happens again, you are dead to me, you sighed between screams. Tried not to cry, but it hurt so bad. Please, you heard yourself say again. Keep your promise this time. You have let me down so many times. Barely had breath to speak.
I know, he whined. but this is a brand new me. I swear on all that is holy it won't happen. It will never, never, happen again.
It did, and he's right. It will never, ever, happen again.

Phyllis,
Why they fall for those lines is beyond me. A leopard never losses his spots. Not without help anyway. Very good write and I like the ending especially.
abuse should not be tolerated by anyone ... it's easier said than done but there comes a time when the abused has had enough ... in the last verse, you inform the reader that though the abuse did occur again even though he swore it would not the abused has been pushed to the limit ... she either left him or did him in ... i like how you left it up in the air ...
Often the chain must be broken by the victim because the abuser does not truly believe that he can change himself. There are abusers and then there are MEN. Men don't need to control and destroy they know how to nurture and love. Excellent poem, Pea, and congrats on the publishing of it.
Take care,
Sherry
The truth of these lines is far too brutal and painful. We talk about wars overseas but equally tragic are the ones that take place daily in bedrooms and kitchens, resulting in these grossly intimate casualties. Thank you for holding up this brilliant mirror of conscience.

One chilling story -- happens in the best of homes. This poem should be posted on billboards across country!! It can't be said lound enough, or often enough. ~~Carmen
Good! It won't happen again can be a two way street. Nice to remind everyone of that, whether the problem is physical or verbal abuse, or just constant carelessness on the part of someone you're trying to work with.
C H I L L I N G, effective pen to read this morning, Pea. How awful! Potentially life-saving message in this P O W E R F U L, no holds barred, excellent piece. Thank you, and well done!
