Don't look on me with pity or with
tears in your eyes ~
Look deeper than the handicap ~
where real beauty lies.
Don't look at me with sorrow for
the things I will miss~
I can still put my arms around my
Mommy..give her a kiss.
I can still see a butterfly on beautiful
wings of gold~
I can taste the rain on my lips...
Such beauty untold.
Don't be sad cause I can't dance ~ or
I can't play or run~
I will never be like other kids ~ or have
my season in the sun.
But I can love with all my heart ~ I
can watch others play ~
I can share in their joy ...I can
cherish every day.
I don't take for granted any blessings
God's given me~
So please dry away your tears....I
have strength and dignity.
I put on my brightest smile.. I stand
proud and tall~
I want to be a shining light...an
inspiration to ALL.
Yes, I would like to play just like
other children do~
But God didn't make me to
be like you.
Someday I will soar way above the
clouds on high~
No more pain or heartbreak ~ I'll
have wings to fly!

When I read this poem my heart fell into a million peices, As if I could feel what each child like that goes throught each day. It made me cry. Very thouching, nice work.

linda, this is outstanding!! as you know, i am handicapped myself and walk with a forearm crutch (degenerative arthritis); so i know the stares handicapped people get!! bravo for you for writing this; thanks for opening other people's eyes in showing that the disabled can offer so much if they are given the chance!! super write!! love, your friend, karen lynn. which is why i write the stories or poems i do; most deal with handicapped kids or adults, because i know (somewhat) what they are facing!!!

Linda, it's amazing that these children find their lives and limitations nothing to think about. They laugh and cry just like everyone else. My oldest daughter has a handicap her left forarm is missing and part of her hand, but if you told her she was handicapped she'd laugh in your face. She's 20 now and has more boys calling her for her than I can take some days. God Blessed all of them in someway.

This is beautiful...it made me cry.. I have a disability (Mild Cerebral Palsy) and I felt like I was reading about myself as a child...I still have not come to terms with some of the heartbreak I had to endure as a child b/c of this... Anyway what I'm trying to say is THANK YOU for writing this... it gives me hope that not all people think as I think they do about us...

I work with the handicapped. Being taught pity and losing the ability to feel in power or valued is a LEARNED behavior taught by society as a whole. The children have it right, we need to not ruin them.
