He took her hand and led her,
To the worn old cedar chair,
Neath the giant elm in their garden,
She was always happiest there.
He drew her sweater round her shoulders,
As he looked into soft blue eyes,
Silently praying she’d recognize him
Though he wore no form of disguise.
A shy smile played at the corners of her mouth,
But he knew from the blankness of her stare,
Their life together she couldn’t recall,
He was simply a stranger who cared.
She was cruelly pulled away from him,
To a void that locked her away,
A sob caught deep within his throat,
He was losing her more every day.
He couldn’t remember his life before her,
She was always his very best friend,
His lover, his mentor, his greatest joy,
He’d be with her til the end.
Part of him was disappearing too,
As the torment ravaged her mind,
Slyly stealing her memory of him
Leaving naught of their past behind.
A tear slowly trickled down his cheek,
As with veiled lids his mind screamed “why”?
Her touch like silk upon his cheek
She gently wiped his face dry.
She smiled so tenderly with her caress,
And for a moment his spirit rose,
Recognition shone in her soft blue eyes,
As she kissed the tip of his nose.
With his arm around her shoulders,
He returned her beautiful smile,
He knew he’d give everything he owned
To keep her with him for a while.
As quickly as she came to him,
She slipped away once more,
But not before he promised her,
“I’ll love you forevermore.”
