Mama said…
Mama said black boys don’t play with guns
She said that they don’t linger behind either when the sun has gone home
Mama said that black boys don’t wear hoodies
when they go into stores
They don’t wear their pants under their butts and wait there is more
Mama said that she knows best
She said that every black boy was designed to be their best
Mama said that it’s okay to cry
And black boys don’t have to lie, steal and cheat to get ahead
They don’t have to sell drugs to be rich
They can use their brain instead
Mama said that black boys are sometimes lazy, not wanting to try
She said that we weren’t all created to play sports and that’s no lie
Mama said that some of us were created to do great things even before our birth
Mama said that the morose part is that we don’t know our own worth
Mama said that real friends don’t watch you fall and that they can’t lead your way
She said that there is one lesson that all black boys should learn
And that’s how to dream even when we can’t play
Mama said a pen should be our weapon of choice
She said the prisons are filled to capacity
She said that it is time to use our voice
Just like Martin Luther King, we have God on our side
Mama said that Jesus is waiting for me to invite him inside
Mama said that she loves me even though sometimes she needs to scream
Mama says a lot if you know what I mean
When mama speaks she speaks from the heart
Without a lighter or a match, my mama ignites her own spark.
