Imagine the era of the Orient Express.

Untitled Love

In early days of times long past
When secret passions were publicly outcast
Comes forth a story of love unbridled
A scene, forever to remain untitled.

He’s unburdened traversing the free new world
Not knowing, the events about to unfurl
A handsome man, soft curly hair of black
Impeccably dressed, though wearing an old battered hat.

She’s a lady, golden hair, eyes of emerald green
Silken dress, bonnet of lace, such beauty unseen
Married a man, a magistrate so fine
Many lonely nights for affection she’d pine.

Two days travel, for her young sisters’ birthday
Far from her house, loveless, cold and grey
Polite conductor, their ticket he punches
Then bids good evening as night approaches.

Introduces himself, this gentleman of note
Stows his bag, removes his tailored overcoat
She smiles, admiring his athletic stature
Loving brown eyes, model perfect posture.

Train shunts forward, starting this journey
He watches, as children play on a gurney
Puffs of black smoke whisk on past
There’re alone, in this compartment of class.

Lacquered red timber, brass polished bright
Ornate luggage racks, crystal clear lights
Wide leather seats, one could stretch and lie
Blinds pulled down, so others can’t pry.

Staring into darkness, she let’s out a sigh
Thinking of her wasted life, starts to cry
Leaning forward, places his hand upon her shoulder
With gentle voice, begins to console her.

She tells of a life, emotionally starved
A stage career she could have easily carved
Instead, married a harsh tyrant of a man
Who rules her mind with force of hand.

Now beside her, softly says “please don’t frown”
“Let not your tears, stain your beautiful gown”
A trusting smile replaces her tears
Momentarily forgetting her terrible fears.

Trains’ gentle rocking, brings them closer
Safe in strong arms, away from her abuser
Feeling his breath, releases her restrictions
Kindled passion overrides instilled convictions.

Smell of perfume, his adrenalin’s pumping
Kissing her ear, her hearts’ now thumping
Red lips, soft as velvet petals
He removes her bonnet, while she trembles.

Heated bodies moving in unison
Releasing of souls, formally imprisoned
Tabooed thoughts finally dismembered
Forbidden love forever remembered

Locked embrace, under blankets warm
Knowing they’ll part, with coming of dawn
Unstoppable love, they knew at first site
Memories now of one unforgettable night.

He walks from the train, stops then turns
Now on the platform, this man her heart yearns
Tips his hat as carriages slowly move away
Hoping their paths may cross again some day.

Receiving inheritance, when her ill husband dies
Time has passed, to herself she only confides
Thinking of that night, her memory drifts back
Then watches her son, soft curly hair of black.
