Mountain Secrets

Secrets are sometimes found in the wind,
buried in rock, and hidden with good reason.

Beware, the mountain whispers,

here abide
the dragon-hearted.
who have no love--
men with shovels,
picks, and timbers,

Beware, the moutain sighs,

they who draw
the iron from my veins,
creeping through cracks
and cavern spaces,
drinking from
sunless streams
in limestone grottos;

The fey misshapen folk--
lords of fire and forge.
Hammering--hammering
they gleen treasure
from my hollow heart.

Their marble eyes
see a thousand shades
of black within
rock-bound vaults.
Small fingers
like white worms,
pry rude jewels
from the clay
Kobald arms--
knotted like tap-roots
from the strain--
burrow and claw,
for elements of
a fever dream.

They mean to keep
what they claim.
and they claim
everything
sight unseen.

This poem is unique and profound! So true about Man vrs Nature and the relationship of prudent stewardship. While God gives man dominion over things of this world, we are expected to show respect and thanks giving for all his creation. Unfortunately, we are doing an awful job of it! Your poem using the mountain as a speaker demonstrates this perfectly! Great Job! Enjoyed this immensley! I attempted to do a similar thing with a poem I wrote "Ode To A Tree" but this poem is by far gets to the heart of the matter!

This is the long-awaited 4th book of The Chronicles of Henry Roach-Dairier, a future world without people. Think Planet of the Ants, not Planet of the Apes, for young adults and adults.
