The setting of the Sun

Arizona basks in darkness
when the Midnight Sun burns bright
She beckons us and harkens
While she holds us, Oh so tight

Alaska’s winds are changing
As the season rushes in
From the broad expanse of daylight
To the night it will begin

August is precursor
To the awful fated light
Alaska turns to Purser
And slowly pays for night

Depressing, un enchanting
The darkness as it falls
We all know it is coming
As it beckons and it calls

Suicides increase now
With reported Daylight less
Timid souls can’t sleep now
And seek escape through death

The sun, it swings it’s merry way
From north to Southern Cross
It sheds It’s light each brand new day
Our universe’s Boss

Good poem, Steven. Of course there's the other side of the story too, when the sun is up nearly 24 hrs/day, and you're energized beyond belief and think you can live forever. At least that's what happened to me one glorious week in Fairbanks last summer. Terry

I wonder, Steven, how long you have to live in Alaska
before you become accustomed to the midnight sun? How
do the Native Americans handle it? Many questions to
this powerful write. And so well written. -gene.

I heard long ago about the long days in Alaska and the light for nights. A friend's friend long ago married and went to Alaska. Inge in now dead, but she died of cancer I believe. Her husband remarried and is living in a town near us. She was a wonderful girl and told us all about the midnight Sun in Alaska. It was just as you put it here. Good write**********

A powerful, brief glimpse into what it is like to live in Alaska and the far north where there is a price for having a long night. "Timid souls can't sleep now and seek escape through death" reveals the need to be strong or stay away and live where night and day have a balance.
