The Smells of Home
While the sun still sleeps;
It's my soul that reflects-
For it knows it's that time of year
It's that time of year; When
I was but a child-
When the smells of home draws near
I can still hear the clanking of the tin pans;
That homemade sweetness in the air-
Buttermilk biscuits; Cornbread dressing;
Aahh...it was heaven, I swear
The chatter; The laughter;
Just alot of catching up-
Cinnamon spiced hot apple cider;
my palm feels the warmth from the cup
Football plays; Announced excitedly;
actually it was more like a yell-
The old tomcat would let out a
screeeech-
when a kid would step on his tail
There was bastin' n choppin' n
whippin' going on-
and cousins we seen once a year-
A wrinkled fat man, with a funny grin-
probably from all the 'holiday cheer'
Water runnin'; The kitchen was a mess;
the prize gobbler was cooked just right-
We'd all gather 'round the diningroom table-
and feast to our hearts delight
One by one they'd all retreat;
and the house would grow quiet and still-
When the sun would sleep; We'd all reflect;
on that wonderful Thanksgiving meal
With a sigh and a thought; It's that
time of year-
When the smells of home draws near
