A humble tribute in memory of those who died in flood waters
May their souls rest in peace
Waters
Waters high as spirals of fire
Consume my desperate soul
Desperate for air
As I drown
And the waters
Keep rising higher
I gasp
I reach out for my babe
Desperate to breathe
I drown
Despair around me
As the ocean is shaking under my feet
No ground to hold me steady
No air to fill my burning lungs
The world is falling apart
As I drown
I kick the ocean floor
To rise
To breathe
Floating corpses around me gape
I search for her among the corpses
A child of nine
I clutch her tiny feet
And pull her out of the water
No breath in the tiny chest
I breathe into her mouth
But the waters
Spiral higher
I’m caught into the waves
I drown
At the bottom of the sea
I see her angel face
And she pulls me out of the water

Very powerful tribute to the tsunami victims

I am sharing your prayer. Your poem is extraordinary, very strong. I will show it to a friend who nearly perished in the tsunami waters himself. This poem is a deeply felt tribute to the victims and a visualisation of their souls' transition from one world into the other, desparate yet full of beauty. It requires a very open heart to experience as strongly as you do the impact of a suffering you have not witnessed or undergone yourself. I admire this ability.
