What Am I?

My son asked me about my name today,
Where it came from,
He asked me quietly;
“What am I?”

Ah, how my heart swelled,
With motherly pride,
I told him the truth;

“My son so sweet and shy…

You are a bear,
Strong and protective,
Moving slowly through the forest,
Enjoying the freedom of your youth,

You are a wolf,
Trotting so many miles,
Exploring the domain of your life,
Searching for friendship and love,
Within the realm of your world…

You are a rabbit,
Quiet and shy,
Soft and lovely,
Trusting in your will to survive…

You are an eagle,
Wise and free,
Flying in the sky,
Forever free…

You are my son,
Adored and loved,
A mother’s dream of honor and hope,
Looking back at me,
With shiny black eyes…

You are a boy,
Becoming a good man,
With the hope of the world,
Resting on your young shoulders…

My son,
You may not know what you are,
But I do,
And I do not fear for your future,

You are the light of my life,
A good and strong son,
Noble and true friend,
You are blessed and loved…

You are my son.”

What a wonderful legacy to leave for your son. All sons should have such a legacy handed down to them. When they are told this, how could they not turn out to be good men. This is excellent. The picture and poem are beautiful.

Every word exudes such love, such deep emotion, Retta... I thought, of course, of my own son, who oftens asks me to recall little moments we have shared. It is always my pleasure to do that. Your poem is so personal, yet sings a universally beloved song for parents and their children. I found myself slowing down, wishing to absorb each thought and word. A beautiful piece, indeed. katy xox.

This sounds like a beautiful prayer for all the world's children from the depths of a mother's heart. It also sounds like the words that a loving Father God would that we ALL could hear, for that is how, I am sure, He sees us, too! Purity in thought and expression, Retta - just beautiful, and should be carved in stone somewhere for the world to see... TY Kate xx

Reindeer, I'm just beaming reading this one. Wonderful poem. I don't have any real claim to Native American heritage, but have always identified with its spiritual wisdom and teachings and have shared a little of that with my boy. When he was six, his uncle dubbed him "little bright star" and it gave him such pride and joy.
