Poem Artwork

Little girls dream of the day,
When their prince will come,
And save them,
Ride away,
On white steeds and live
Happily ever after…

Ha ha…
What a funny thing to teach,
Little girls so eager to believe,
In miracles and dreams,
More like a nightmare,
When it never becomes reality…

Little girls learn harsh truths fast,
That friendship fades,
Or moves away,
Or is replaced on rainy days,
By diaries that keep their secrets safe…

They preserve the rose,
Given to them in the blush of first love,
Then when they get old,
Spend hours growing their own flowers,
In pretty gardens lined with stone…

Family ties they once loved,
Now strangle them,
And become tangled in their hearts,
Not sure what to feel,
When they are so far apart…

Little girls grow into women,
With hard hearts,
And cold eyes,
That cannot see the weary prince,
Standing before them,
In faded glory,
And ripped jeans…

They no longer need dreams,
Having become grounded,
In cruel reality,
That all the fairy tales were false,
And the only prince charming they see,
Is on TV…

Thank you.

This is real life and I thank you for it. It's pretty rare to find Prince Charming these days. My aunt and uncle who raised me for the most part gave me unrealistic expectations--they were married for 56 years and miserable when apart, and that was only when one of them was in the hospital. I realize now that even they didn't have the perfect marriage because they were codependent.

humorous Reatta but you must remember, even though they may never find prince charming, the dream counts also. sometimes all we have is dreams.I'm still dreaming of things I want in life, i see others with them and i want them also. Another thing, that prince might be found and may end up being a toad after awhile. After I got married i found that it is good and bad, so we learn to take the good with the bad. My wife is a sweetheart sometime and a little witch other times. Lifes an up and down affair on the outside. It is in the inside where it can be made to run on an even horizon. When my wife turns to her little witch, I turn to her prince by being understanding. Of course I never get the same respects, when I turn to a toad, she becomes a big giant foot, ready to crush me if i don't change back. seeya love G

Sadly true...many of us were raised with "unreal" expectations, and as we age, the "reality" of life wears us down. Hope that brighter times are still to come for you, M'Lady. Not all the princes are fantasy and fairy tale, as the end of your poem hints. Some of them are just worn and tired...This was a moving work...

This is true however in my opinion
also. The "White night" comes for every

Once a prince charming will always be a prince charming, no matter what he wears...unless the charms dies from within. One must not let that happen.

Once a little girl filled with dreams, will always be a little girl filled with dreams, no matter how old this little girl is...unless the little girl becomes old from within. One must not let that happen either.

Reindeer, this should be posted in every mothers home so she can learn not to continue the old spread of false hopes that we grew up with. This is a fantastic piece of work and I hope you publish it somewhere for new mothers, so they can understand that fairy takles can be dangerous to our health!Outstanding write!( send it to some magazines for women)

Oh, so true, Reindeer but there are also:

Little boys who are told
wives, their helpmate will be bold.
After marriage and forty pounds
they're not helpmates, they're just round.

As you can see, us guys have a little different take on it. Well, at least some of us guys. I DID love the poem but I just couldn't help myself.

But hey, what's wrong with weary old princes with torn jeans? We can't help it; we got old.

Hmmm... you can keep the ones on TV, Retta... I'm the loony tune who falls madlly in love with dead guys: Keats, Shakespeare, Frost... sigh... heartbreaking, isn't it? (grin). If loving someone is an adventure and there's plenty of rib tickling, I'm fine. You've penned a true reality piece.. thoughtfully expressed. I'm a hopeless romantic... no man can dent that, I suppose. Carry on... katy xox.
