3rd Presidential Debate (click to view video)

In a moment of unexpected humor, President Obama instructed Governor Romney in our modern day military’s new capabilities. He had grown a little weary of hearing Mitt Romney continue with his superficial analysis of our military capability with his observation that our Navy has fewer ships today than it had in 1917. So he reminded Mitt that we also have fewer horses and bayonets; that we have air planes that can actually land on aircraft carriers; and our nuclear submarines go ”under water” in this modern day and age.

Was Obama’s patronizing humor “over the top?” Of course.  But did it bring Romney’s repeated comment to an end? Yes.  But…did it stop me?  No way.  Here are some new instructions for our troops and our candidates:

[Enter our radio announcer]  With their faithful Indian companions, the daring and resourceful unmasked riders of the plains led the fight for law and order in the early western United States. Nowhere in the pages of history can one find greater champions of justice. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. From out of the past come the thundering hoof beats of the U.S. Cavalry. Led by a fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust, and a hearty “Hi-O Silver.” The U.S. Cavalry rides again!  [Begin William Tell Overature]

[To the Army]

Saddle up men
We’re off to war
Get them muskets
Off the floor

We have less horses
We have less hay
Well bless my soul
Was that a yea or a neigh?

Fill yer canteens and
Bring yer tobacky
Today we’re a-goin’
Clickety clackey.

[To the Navy]

Loose lips, sink ships
With less ships and more lips
How many ships
Can our loose lips zip?

Anchors away, my boys
Anchors away
Now turn this boat around
And head thataway.

Submarines up
Submarines down
But when they’re down
Won’t everyone drown?

{To the Air Force]

Planes in the air
Planes all the merrier
Clem wants to know
What’s an aircraft carrier?

Canons that go
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Jets that go
Zoom! Zoom! Zoom!

[To Mitt Romney]

No military smarts
Lived your life in a bubble?
No problem Mitt
You're a Dick Cheney double

Bin Laden wasn’t worth that much to you
Still, we did pretty well
Did we have to move heaven and earth?
No, just found him a place in hell.

[To Barack Obama]

Barack Obama
He's our man
If he can't do it
The teleprompter can.

Our future's secure
But before we sing
Better check into
That "vision" thing.

I love the humor in this. It's really amazing how little people understand how the military has changed. All the God-fearing patriotic hair-trigger folks out there that think that the word defense means sending massive armies to beat up by little countries and foreign ideologies and aren't willing to join the rest of the world in peace and progress really bother me. Great creativity and a lot of truth.
