Bless the reader who can discern fiction from fact, humor from serious content, and who believes as I do that self-deprecation is preferable to insulting others. That said, this poem is fiction, it is an attempt at humor, and a slap at myself.

Paradise Interrupted

I was 13
On the brink of a tidal wave
Of fantasy and emotion
Wrapped in gushes of testosterone
Pulsating ebbing flowing
But always
Omnipresent.

She was 21
The older woman
So they said.
She was wealth and health
And flashing eyes signaling
All things possible
And many that were not.

She was the sweet urgency of now
A portrait of what could be
In joyful strokes of
Perfection.
The epitome of feminine
Pulchritude
Wise beyond her years;
She was love in bloom
Prose and poetry
Encapsulated and intertwined
In a direct link to my heart.

Every glance was intended
Just for me
A collusion of senses
Of knowledge and imagination
Swathed in masterful strokes
Of us and the
Intimacy of all things possible
And necessary
And potential.

Suddenly there was an
Intrusion—
A hubbub of confusion.
Penetrating my reverie
Slashing and disarming.

In barely numbed perception
She was directing her attention
Entirely to me—
“Please stand and face
Your classmates”
She intoned.

Why would I want to do that?
Still, her wish was my command.

I unraveled and stood
In unsynchronized movements
Lifting up the totality
Of all that life offered
All that it portended
All that ever was
Is now
And ever could be.

It began with snickers
Barely audible
Then growing into laughter
And bursting into a
Crescendo of mocking
Ridicule.

What did they all know
That I did not?
Where did I miss the point?
What hath this moment of
Tenderness and serenity
Given way to?

“Sit down this moment”
I heard her shriek.
“Sit down now!”

I slowly descended into
Meek submission
Confused and in
Attenuated focus.

“Now write 100 times—
“I apologize for becoming
Aroused in class” and
“It will never happen again.”

I smiled at the end of this write. Even girls have embarrassing moments but fortunately it doesn't show like a males does. Ah poor young man. The teacher should have ignored and just left alone. Children can be bullied for something like this. She wasn't using her head here.

That was not a good beginning. But you managed not to take that incident seriously. Or you wouldn't have been such a romantic in real life!!!JK

In spite of all your conditions, I see that your fiction has been interpreted otherwise by many comments. I've always seen things strangely, so I sympathize with the poor fellow in the classroom, and while I might smile, I wouldn't laugh at him if I knew what was happening. My most embarrassing moment at school came in the first grade when I accidentally took my snow pants off after recess in the hall and realized that it was a warm day and I wasn't wearing snow pants. ;-)

Since it's one of those things that we tend to remember, mine occurred at my girlfriend's house at her birthday party. It wasn't embarrassing because she was sitting on my lap. I was 11 at the time and actually quite pleased. I still am.

Oh, bless me and YOU! I have laughed so hard over this! Believe it or not we girls had the same problem but, fortunately for us, we weren't so, um, obvious about it! Well done! Rebecca

A very poignant experience beautifully rendered (and remembered no doubt). Thank you for bringing this to life again; it is in the experience of all of us (males), but some too shy to tell.

In front of a class it did not happen, but instead in a shower certain things rose to the occasion even though the occasion was not then but from thoughts of someone else at the time...thankfully I was in the shower by myself and the rest of the gym class already left...it never happened again, but I thought about it regularly...-e-

Ah, the testosterone fueled fantasies of youth,
and the resulting bulges of proof.

Apparently, Mrs Robinson she was not.
