Lessons

As we age
There is no let up
We still must confront
Challenges and obstacles
That test our resolve;
But now we know right
From wrong with greater
Clarity
And still we act with greed
With self indulgence
Against the nudges of
Our better angels;
We know unfit when we
See it hear it feel it;
We know ungrateful by
The taking and
The lies;
We know unjust by
The cruel outcomes twisted
Into virtues;
If life is a testing ground
The losers are still winning
And the winning grinds
More slowly;
But onward we trudge
With little more to
Guide us than
The promise of
Better days ahead;
Against the headwinds
Of the sound and the fury
And the tales told by idiots
Signifying
Nothing.

I can easily espouse the philosophical perspective that you have shared through your verses here, Edward. Thank you. Love and peace to you,

Each day dawns before us like a carrot on a string, I think! Well done!

Life continues to test us...
And we cannot use naivety as a
Valid excuse as we age...
Oh to be guided by those nudges of
Our better Angels...
To err is to be human......
Fine piece of writing...

It is when those challenges and obstacles began to be too much that people tend to withdraw into thoughts of earlier, simpler times. Those thoughts can either benefit from life lessons as you have shown, or become an obstacle to normal progress.

Will we ever get it right? There are times when I think that the smarter we become, the dumber we get.

Yes, Shakespeare had it right and you reconfirm what we are all beginning to realize, that the battle goes on and the clarity remains lost in the mist of modern contradictions. A life lesson indeed. Well expressed and timely. John
