Spiritual subjects often pose rhetorical questions that have no need for answers. Indeed, they are better left unanswered.

Serenity

Peace love and contentment
A sense of fulfillment
Are more a state of mind
Than an estate of things;
But do we seek them falsely
In a world of hunger and disease
And dirt and grime and shanty towns
Where crowdedness abounds
And dreams are crushed before
They are formed?

Where are the work the effort and
The sacrifice that go into
Teaching and building and
Planning and growing?

How is it possible to find
The comfort of solitude
Without shutting out the world
Around us?
And if we do find them
How can we share them
In good grace and clear conscience
When they are rejected by
Those who need them the most?

Perhaps the mystics have
The answers
For surely I do not.

I am leery of those who
Project too much passion for their beliefs
It suggests they have found a truth
That eludes all others;
Believing in purity and self beauty
Are incompatible with a sense of
Modesty and logic while it suggests
Form over substance;

I am not at all content with
Who I am or what I am or
Why I am or how I am;
And so peace and fulfillment
Are too distant for me to
Pretend to something without
Having traveled the distance
And having made neither the sacrifices
Nor surmounted every obstacle
Along the way before I dare to
Bask in that tranquil place some call
Serenity.

Very well penned. There are many stories and poems referencing the state of maturity, but as you've pointed out here, too many try to reach being grown up without the appreciation of your last stanza. Kudos.

We find serenity when we write. We are cleansed. We "put it all out there". Write on!

Love ya!

I like the expression "work hard and play hard" . However, I think that scale is never really balanced. Seeking serenity is a life long pursuit few maintane a balance in...the pharma industry and yogi nuts have capatalized best on that , and I like my yoga. I'm just sayin;)

Contentment is elusive. A feeling I have never felt. Belongings don't offer it to me. Family and friends offer only a glimpse. The only times I have felt good about myself is when I have done something good for another. It might be adding to my self-worthiness or it might be adding some light to my soul.

You raise some very cogent and deep questions that most leave unanswered in their quest for serenity in this life. And I'm also very pleased with the honesty expressed compared with the relative dishonesty of those who have all the answers with their particular beliefs.

To me, serenity would be to live out my days in the local State Park among all the animals that flourish out there. Unfortunately, this animal is so far removed in creature comforts that even the necessities of water, food, and shelter would be beyond me trying to live there. So, I will have to live with the serenity created by the artificial suburban world I live in, hopeful that it does not all collapse while I'm still here taking full advantage of it.

Indeed, it's nearer than most seem to realise. Yet the mystics and ancient texts have been solid guide posts to the inner wealth.

Yes, having to live in the real world does make finding serenity very difficult. Even trying to evade the worlds' stranglehold, you end up like Jeremiah Johnson, remember the movie, (Robert Redford), who moved away to the mountains but the world still found him.

Because the world is constantly changing, we are constantly changing too. That alone makes serenity an elusive goal. For the most of us, the best we can hope for is to just be able to relax for a little bit.

So right, Ed. Passion ans its variants are like sales slogans these days. Serenity, the real version, is gifted after the hard work. That said, I also believe in the possibility of personal and peaceful serenity through meditation along the way - just as long as you're willing to return from that helpful, temporary withdrawal to encounter the world as it really is.
May you find serenity, whatever the process!

Oh yes, serenity is the most elusive of desires. We may capture moments of serenity, but they are few and far between. That however does not preclude our seeking or desiring it. Yet, as you suggest eloquently, how can we feel serene while others all around us are suffering. An interesting poem. John

I agree,somethings are better, much better left unanswered, Edward. We can beat our brains out trying to answer the unanswerable, and all we get is a sore head and the same old problems.
