As I enter the final stage of my life
I want to walk it free from the many distractions
that have consumed too much of my time.
I came in on the wings of a dove and I want to
leave soaring with eagles.
I do not seek the sting of death only
the soft assuring kiss of rain drops
a cool breeze upon my face
and the noisy chatter of small animals
somewhere in my presence.
I will go gentle into that good night
and bravely toward that brighter light
knowing I came up short of all my
expectations—that did not matter.
Life and experiences are good teachers
I lived among them and learned to follow my star
to a place just beyond my comprehension
yet knowing it is the same place from which
I came into this world.
There are many more miles for us to travel
in spite of our aging bodies
Youth and challenge and daring will come
our way again
And if there are choices to be granted
I will make them all with you foremost in my heart.
I loved this line: "knowing I came up short of all my
expectations—that did not matter." That is so true for most of us. Was it because we're Americans that we expected to accomplish so much? And yet, we came up short. And now we wonder why we didn't become as great as we expected. But there must be more to it all. Perhaps in the next realm? Or does it matter, we all do the best we can with what we get. Thanks for posting!
What precious reflections.

Wonderful writing as always Edward.
You have not gone gentle in many economic woes of our great country and for that I am eternally grateful. If the expectation of, "Youth and challenge and daring will come our way again," soothes you now in advancing age, that's all right, but there is no need to expect when you have practiced your noble profession so well.
It appears to me every time I read one of your poems that it
comes uppermost and foremost from your beautiful precious heart.
As you have had many a year to perfect this art,
I can see how this poem turns out to be a real soul softening
experience for me and for others. Thank you for sharing Edward.
Keep spreading the light, and the love.
This write was a wise, graceful and inspiring caress to the soul! So much said in such a fluid and deeply personal way. There are some writes that give a precious gift on reading and "Images of Eternity" is one of them. When one writes with a still heart, poetry dives deep and resonates forever!
In today’s secular environment the two worlds of science and spirituality are alien worlds, distinguished primarily by a deep-seated antagonism in which the principles of spirituality and the pragmatism of modern science exist face to face in a peren
