A Tribute to Judy Garland
With my low-class manners and my best bow tie
I was quite the handsomest of men
I went to spend a dollar
At the Rootin’ Toot and Holler
And lost my heart instead.
With her high-flung manners and her low-brow dress
She was more than I could comprehend
I started to yen
So I counted to ten
Then I counted to ten again.
Clang clang clang went the trolley
Ding dong ding went the bell
Zing zing zing went my heartstrings
In a moment I got up and fell.
The night was cool, the air was sweet
The scent of roses charmed me off my feet
I tried to sing, but couldn't squeak
In fact I liked her so much I couldn't speak.
Buzz, buzz, buzz went the buzzer
Plop, plop, plop went the pills
Stop, stop, stop went my heart strings
As I started to leave
She took hold of my sleeve with her hand
As if it were planned.
She stayed on with me and it was grand just to stand
With her hand holding mine
to the end of the line ...
And this is it.
Thanks, Judy. You are still a treasure. Rest in peace.
The real Trolley Song
and she endured so much at a young age …
She is one of my earliest memories in The Wizard of Oz…
And was wonderful in Meet Me In St Louis…essential
viewing each Christmas…
Your sincere appreciation of her is totally reflected
in your quirky tribute poem Ed…
I loved it…!
