At times I feel the need for time So as to catch my breath There’s nothing like a bit of rhyme So I don’t catch my death
I close my eyes How the time flies I feel it race Perceive its depth Upon my face I sense its breath
It smells of rain and melting snow and memories Of forest floor and alpine meadow and snow flurries Of August days and prairie breezes and golden sheaves Of rain puddles and dripping trees and autumn leaves Of unmet dreams and love affairs and childhood toys Of balloons, clowns and country fairs and happy noise Of wilted flowers and ancient powers and manuscripts Of magic brews and crumbling towers and secret crypts
Of… and… Of… and… ad infinitum… Time has no end; it has no datum
The sense of time as it flies by Is a merry-go-round The friends who have just waved good-bye Are easy to be found
These fragments shown by time’s racing Have shown me much today There’s not much point in my pacing Eternity’s an endless day

Yes, Regis, true. Pacing, being in a hurry, yelling, and all the things we do, like pat our feet, does not bother time. Time is not our master, it is us who tries to master time. Thanks for sharing a bit of time with us.
Superb, Regis! Again you've imparted meaning not just with your words, but also with rhythm. You've created the sound effect of spinning round. Some reviewers have mentioned the sense of merry-go-round. It reminds me of your "Afraid" poem in which you had the ticking drone effect of time, which can be disturbing. However, in this poem you give us the delightful ta-da-da-da-ta-da-da-da-ta-da-da-da-Dance of Time. Excellent! I love a poet who takes the time to craft a piece.

Kites seek the wind here
Sea oats practice
Their patient sway
To rhythms
Of seasons and year
Dunes rise from the sand
Carved in a sculptor's caress
Who
Would dare to dream
Of creation on a scale
Of unbounded distance
A seagull holds in the breeze
Wings stretched wide
Like a lover's arms
Both share
Their
Unspoken word to the wind
"Come to me"
While the morning sun
Still raises its eyes to the clouds
Shells dot the sand shelf
In places the ocean
Swept them last night
Flowing promises of return
Maybe the sand still remembers
The footsteps
Small hands
Building impermanence
Leaving marks
Of hearts drawn
With names underneath
Carvings of hopes
And small dreams
That are washed away daily
Both us
And this place bowing
At different paces
To what finds us
And binds us both...

This is an excellent take on the subject of time, something I seem to be drawn to in most of my works, but you grasp it so much better. Very well penned. Thank you.
Simply wonderful poetry....we seem to become more aware of time as we get older too. I often have that subject running through my head as I write AND live my life. This is just beautiful.

I can so easily relate to the words in this poem. You have such a special gift Regis. I often read your poetry and marvel at how you are able to say so much in so few words. The imagery you've created with your words can be related to by many. In my own life at times the pace is frenetic and this is when I have a deep desire to walk in a quiet place surrounded by nature. When you are listening to the soothing sound of a stream, breathing the redolence of the earth and hearing the sounds of birdsong it is easy to feel as though time has stopped for a while.
Beautiful write and profound ending.

I concur with ACE. Most are, Time reflexing like a whore falls wan**ng to the floor. Is what I feel like saying to so many. But Regis this is above all, showing poetry skill on a subject I had never found commenting on yet..nice one
