I cannot tell when the dream ended and the nightmare began. Now, I am just waiting for the dawn.

Poem Artwork

Malaise

Since you’re not with me
Unease has settled around me
Like a suffocating fog
I no longer find fragrant flowers
The sky’s the same from dawn to dusk
Emotionlessly pallid
Promising soothing rain
But remaining arid
I often see dark-clad crows
Perched on the limbs
Of skeletal trees
Like severe sentinels
Peering accusingly at me
Birds have ceased their singing
I’ve not seen a rainbow
For a timeless while
I cannot tell spring from fall
I don’t know the sun from the moon
And sometimes
The siren of self-annihilation beckons
From her mystical misty magical shore
And though I would never give in
To her whimsical whims
It makes me wonder
Where such thoughts came from
Like ebon bats
Perhaps
From the hole in my soul
From which moans of despair
Rise in the air
Of unease
Since I’m not with you

Your Express of this poem made me feel as if you were there for some of my emotionally trying times. I looked out my patio door one day & seen:
"I often see dark-clad crows
Perched on the limbs
Of skeletal trees
Like severe sentinels
Peering accusingly at me"
There were nearly 200 crows in my tree or more!! I felt the entirety of this poem.

Such an excellent mood piece, Regis, although I hardly want to call it that. Mood means many things. This yearning, bordering on despair, is certainly more of a malaise than a mood. The picture complements your words and feelings.

This makes me wish, somehow, you might find a piece of silver, of frippery, to offer to the crows and watch them play...

Thanks,
Gina

A very sad and burdenning statement! One can write this but to live it is almost damning. Powerfully put-together poetry! Remember, the black crows and bats have their 'lighter-colored' counterparts!

Very heavy. The poem expresses pain that has withdrwan into itself. The siren of self-annihilation is a key metaphor in this context. But is pain expressed without a certain distance not at times dangerous?

It is hard to imagine how one can compose words in such a magical way which shakes the heart so irressistably. May the hole in your soul be filled with the light of love and the unpleasant thoughts be replaced by peace and eternal joy. Regis I truly like the way you craft poems and give them the shape of a real person interacting with the reader. Thanks for this wonderful offering.

I have often walked through the harrowing trees. The world bland, like the words that refuse to roll off my tongue. My yearning is not physical --- I grasp at that place till no end.

But what sweet poetry evolves from this? Sometimes the most powerful emotions - are the darkest.

You command such presence in this poem.

"dark-clad crows
Perched on the limbs
Of skeletal trees
Like severe sentinels"

Such a powerful image.

Do not let this dark cloud envelope you. We can only become stronger through painful times. The sweetness you seek is just through the trees.

You know I can relate to this kind of pain and to heal with words is the only thing the poet can do, or we can die. I guess we chose to write huh Regis. Beautiful Poem, or should I say...beautiful tears I see falling down your face since the only way to wipe them away and turn them into beauty is to turn them into poetry.

Think we must be made of the same fabric, Regis... what you describe here I can so relate to, but perhaps in an even more extreme way. My mood swings rollercoast almost hourly, depending on how I've received information that either settles or unsettles me, regarding those I care about. My whole life seems to be coloured from moment to moment by what my suprasensitive antennae are picking up in life. Think I must be a cloud, hanging heavy on my own horizon the minute my equilibrium is blown off-course... and one that dissolves into perfectly clear and infinite blue when the mood is right. I am so sorry for your pain, but I think much stems from our inner perspectives which can be ever-shifting; I am not seeking to undermine the relational issues here, but for me this poem speaks more of our personal pathological responses to them. I do hope your emotional weather systems stabilise again soon! A very well-articulated poem on the nature of ease and unease. TY, LOL Kate xx
