This is more than about a rose...

Poem Artwork

Deception

A petal on the pavement
All that remains of
Rose
Bloomed
Much too soon
Rose
Conned by a cunning sun
While the wind still wore winter's wear
Rose
Could not feel his touch
His icy breath froze
Her soul
Rose
Is no more
Than a hint of fragrance
In the frigid air

deceptive means by a person can be icy, and freeze one for wanting another experience like this. Roses are for beauty, but this doesn't hint of beauty, I hints of lust.

I love how the rose in the snow (in the image) is not withered and brown but bright red and very much alive. It's uplifting.

But of course I sense a bit of a sadness in this piece...when you say the rose bloomed much too soon. Perhaps then the image isn't meant for an uplifting emotion...

I like everything about this one, Regis. The picture has wonderful contrast of color - very effective. You have me feeling sad for this rose. The last couple of lines are especially stirring. Somewhere out there is a bruised soul. This poem strikes deep. I consider you to be a master at expressing emotions with nature. You really do have a gift! Love and Hugs,

Oh, the pros and cons of love... "Rose" transcends gender here. Haven't we all received and disbursed our own brand of deception at one time or another?

OOoooo, this is so very deep and emotion-packed that I, for one, would love to see it developed more fully, the images are so crisp and stark. But then, that is the fine-tuning and precision you have chosen to give to the shape of this very poignant piece, Regis... leaving us perhaps feeling that chill edge and longing for the "comfort" of having a more elaborate denouement. Perhaps it is because the subject matter is so captivating too... guess that's the sign of good poetry: always leave the reader wanting more! Captivating, thank you.... and, are you kidding me? WHATEVER you might seek to offer in terms of your love and support for my healing is received with a wide-open heart and thankful embrace, with much gratitude for your loving kindness. Bless you and mwah! LOL Kate xx

Well done Regis! Roses have thorns just like some loves but we still need to take the whiff if for no other reason than to grow. If we are blessed then the thorns become worn or fall away leaving nothing but the beauty and contentment of the scent for a lifetime!

Ohhhh, I like this. Can take it literally and a zillion other ways. I particularly like these kind of poems. It's up to the reader to find the level. And it also is a very common everyday moment which can and does happen, especially up north. It reminds me a bit of Goethe's Meadow Rose or Evening Song. Both are about simple things, a boy picking a rose and getting stuck and howling to no response from the world and having to stand the consequences; and about the world settling down and the person still walking treassured that he will soon rest. They too can go deeper and deeper. Nice write.

Well here's what to do. Pick up that rose petal, put it in an old-fashioned rose jar, add rose oil, glycerin, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice and cap it tightly to preserve the memories. Faded love is recycable. Take the lid off every once in a while to smell the rose. And while you're at it, listen to Bette Midler's 'The Rose.' She says 'Love is only for the lucky.' Thanks Regis, for the lingering scent.
