Thoughts about time and getting older...

Poem Artwork

Where Has Time Gone?

I have been in the fog of denial
In denial of time’s passing
All of that implies
Hoping
Waiting
For time to slow its pace
But that is wishing for
“Pie in the sky”

My former students look old
Some have more grandchildren than I do
I am happy that they did not forget me
That they have good thoughts
About being in my classes
That is a gift to me

The trees I sowed as seeds
Are grown and tall and sturdy
Majestic really

Trees live a very long time
Not so someone like me
Not so most probably you

When I was much younger
I could not wait to be an adult
To have a say in what happens
To be in control

It was a delusion
It would never be

I wish I were a child again
With the insight of knowing
All that being an adult demands
I would pray that time would take its time

It’s why I never get upset
When others keep telling me
That I never grew up
And probably never will

HOLD ON TO THAT REGIS, TO BE YOUNG AT HEART IS A GIFT. REMEMBER THE WORD OF GOD THAT SAYS, '...UNTIL WE BECOME AS A CHILD WE CANNOT ENTER HEAVEN...'(MATT 18:3-4, IS FOR A REASON. THE ABILITY TO LOVE AND TRUST FREELY BEGINS WITH GOD AND THEN OTHERS, THAT IS...OUR NEIGHBORS(MATT 22:37-40). GREAT SHARE, THANK YOU. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+ INSPIRATIONS

Yes Regis, I can relate to this one.
I have been teaching for some time now.
It's been a blessings because I still do.
It's mostly college students, but I visit public schools too.
I am the teacher who sits in the back of the room.
Giving praise to the teacher who is actively orchestrating.
Also providing helpful hints to help new teachers refine their craft.
It's very rewarding to be able to give advice and feel needed.
But, in a way we are all like little children.
We seek approval of others even when we give advice.
Us grown-up kids, we really have it very nice!

Well done again, my friend...

I agree with that last stanza in the way I view you. Although I cherish the wonderful things that I did during my childhood, I guess I'm not at that stage in life where I want to return to it, like you do. I much enjoy this stage where I am comfortable enough to be able to write on almost any subject and get it published. In my childhood, I did well in my schoolwork but never thought of writing as a occupation or even a pastime. There is a certain confinement that goes on with childhood that lacks the freedom I have now. My mother still loves me, but she no longer has to care for me. Other loves do that.

keep the child-like outlook, grown-ups are dullards
who have lost all joy and spontaneity

Time has gone flitting away,
Just as the sun does at the end of the day,
But take heart, the sun will return,
Hopefully when it does return, we won't get from it any burn...-e-

At almost 66, I am still very much a kid at heart, I just wish that I could have back the innocence of childhood. Who knew that old age starts so young? By the way, what did you teach?

You have written something most of us believe, but you have the creative talent to put those thoughts down in black and white. Wonderfully thought out and said, Regis.

Our inner child can always be as young as we can be regardless of how old we are outside. Yes, time flies, and years just go by with a blink of an eye. Even when we look young all we need to do is to look at the people around us and those who grew up with us and you'll get the idea how old you really are. I have never let that bother me though, we only get one life to live and it will be good to live to a ripe old age for ourselves.

If we can retain the child within us, that indeed is a great accomplishment. A touch of melancholy in this poem, Regis, that moves the reader. Thank you.

I didn't have to grow up either, until my parents died, my father when I was sixty-five and my mother when I was seventy. Time, it is our perception of it that we wish to manipulate, fools that we are. We mark life's events with time but time itself is meaningless as it does not exist beyond our metrics. May good health peace and love be with you. Jon Michael
