At 65

I died once and tried to leave early three
Times before arriving here today
All along I thought I would be long gone
Before my whiskers ever turned gray
But here I am like Leonardo now
Not DiCaprio but Da Vinci
Having lost my looks I have my books still
Surviving myself that way someday

I never meant to go on for so long
Somehow but went on curiously
And now my curiosity is strong
To see what is to become of me
Having overcome my hesitation
At becoming who could see this through
Having come true at my destination
Believing in what I leave behind

Gone on a nonlinear pilgrimage
I never thought I would find my way
Or there could be a way for me to find
Here like this now at an awkward age
Too late to leave early and so I stay
For the end of the play just to see
What must be supposed to be anyway
If I am supposed to then I will

Unopposed to going on I know how
Having to all the way through until
I get to the end and transcend somehow
Having made peace with mortality
A long time ago I know what to do
Here before I go to do and be
My best then leave the rest to destiny
Now when what to do is to go on

Though no one gets out of here alive
Surviving I arrive at 65

Very well written....When one reaches the magic age of 65, we reminisce about what we have experienced in our life's journey.

Your words make me wonder about "the big picture" and what it is. Oh, and you haven't lost your looks. Dignified, I'd say.

Love ya!

Only one milestone of many. 65 usually just means Medicare. It takes longer to get Social Security and even longer for some folks to retire. I once thought that my paralysis would make my life very short like it has so many others that I've known. But that hasn't been the case, and as long as I can write and read and comment on poetry here, I will do so. Life is for the living, death is fine with me.

I figure you will have to make about 77 or so to have outlived half of the men of your age.

... And now you are eligible for Social Security payment. Apply for it and don't let the government rip you off.

Interesting poem!
