This short little poem is dedicated to my Vietnam buddie hopefully finishing his 3o year sentence. This is his journey of who he has become.

Who I Have Become

By

Bill Cottringer

Once long ago,

I was an out-law,

Very momentarily;

But after 30-years,

Of being beaten down,

Stripped of everything,

Giving up my freedom,

Being locked in a cage,

I’ve decided something,

Rather sage;

I’ll be an in-law,

Very permanently;

After all,

It’s a choice,

Made for me,

By me,

Because I see,

I can.

RE: Second Chances. I think it was Abraham Lincoln who once said, "life always gives you two opportunities on the important things and it is always a good idea to know when the first one has already come and gone. My Vietnam buddy and I witnessed two young airman foolishly play quick draw, ending one's short life and sending the other one off to Leavenworth for the rest of his long life. Tragedy for 19-year olds to see and experience.

Show me someone who never took a punch and
I;ll show you someone who never took a chance.
How boring is that?

And I believe in second chances. Life keeps moving forward.

I think it's much easier to be an in law than an outlaw any day. Avoids a lot of hassle. After seeing the inside of a police station at seven and getting a reprieve from a policewoman, I went straight from thereon. It's a great feeling to have a clean record.
