Navigating an Affair

Many tempted,
Many submit,
So many reasons,
But little responsibility,
More recklessness
Than caution;
Usually Lust,
Rarely love,
Usually hard,
Rarely Easy.
Mixed emotions—
Excitement and joy,
Regret and guilt,
Disappointment.
Anxiety,
Fear,
Hope,
Longing,
Frustration;
But something,
Often learned:
The grass isn’t,
Always greener,
Comes with weeds,
And some different
Shades of brown.
Never see the ending
Before it comes and goes;
Takes time
To learn the lesson,
Nobody wins.

Fortunately, notwithstanding having the desire, like Jimmy Carter, I never had an affair. But I do recall some animosity when I was dating that was unfounded and came to little consequence. When I taught, I made sure, although I befriended some of my students, to never cross the line into an intimate relationship. Many did and probably paid the consequences.
