Being Free
Am I destined to be,
A tiny little lowly ant,
Crawling underground,
Or a regal golden eagle,
Flying free high above?
The small puddle or stream,
Or the lake or ocean,
In the blowing wind?
Or perched safely in a tree;
The weed or desert flower,
The thorny rose bush,
Or the giant oak tree?
Just a passive observer,
Accepting unwanted realities,
Or an active participator,
Creating ones I want—
Using my mind & heart,
With positive thoughts,
About true beliefs,
To slowly erase and replace,
My false and faulty ones,
About who I really am,
Or what I can really be;
It’s probably time to see
What it means to be free.
Maybe choices are the key.
Can’t draw a round circle,
Leave my head at home,
Move without moving,
Kiss my own lips,
But I can be responsible,
Getting along with others,
Controlling my reactions,
Stop judging experiences,
Learning and loving more,
Free from contradictions.
While I'm not bedridden… Yet, I am rather housebound, only leaving the house for dental and doctor appointments these days because my primary caregiver is way too busy on other activities to take time to get me out occasionally among fellow men and women.
Still, I feel as free as the eagle in your poem because I plan my day and do the day I plan and I'm able, thanks to the Internet, to go almost anywhere and do almost anything, vicariously, if not in person.
I have no real troubles or worries to keep me down. All of life's troubles leave as soon as they arrive and I'm very relaxed and hopeful for my future as long as it lasts.
